Catania
A baroque city built from volcanic stone in the shadow of Mount Etna, with Sicily's wildest energy.

About Catania
Catania lives under the constant presence of Mount Etna—Europe's largest active volcano—and the city's character reflects that elemental force. Destroyed and rebuilt seven times by eruptions and earthquakes, it rose from the ashes in spectacular baroque style, built entirely from black lava stone. The result is dramatic: Via Etnea, the main street, frames Etna's smoking summit, while the fish market (La Pescheria) beneath the Duomo is a roaring, theatrical display of Sicilian life. Catania has a youthful energy thanks to its university, a vibrant nightlife scene, and some of Sicily's best food—pasta alla Norma (named after Bellini's opera, as Bellini was born here), horse meat, and the freshest swordfish and tuna in the Mediterranean.
Best Time to Visit
April to June or September to October. Summer is extremely hot. Spring and autumn offer ideal Etna hiking conditions. The Festa di Sant'Agata in February is Sicily's biggest religious festival.
Local Tips
- Visit La Pescheria at dawn.
Catania's fish market beneath the cathedral is a visceral, theatrical spectacle. A local will take you early when the swordfish are being butchered and the vendors are at their most animated—and then to breakfast nearby.
- Hike Etna with a volcanologist.
A guided Etna excursion goes far beyond the tourist cable car. A local volcanologist will take you to recent lava flows, steam vents, and hidden craters, explaining the geology that shapes Catania's life.
- Eat pasta alla Norma.
This Catanese classic of fried aubergine, tomato, ricotta salata, and basil is named after Bellini's opera. A local knows the trattorias where the aubergine is fried to perfection and the ricotta is freshly grated.
