Lake Como Is Beautiful. Lake Maggiore Is Better.
Sara makes the case for Lake Maggiore over Lake Como, explains why visitors to Lombardia keep making the same booking mistake, and recommends the one dish you cannot leave without trying.
The capital of fashion and design, where business-class buzz meets timeless art.

Milan is Italy's engine. It's fast, stylish, and all business... at first glance. But look past the hustle, and you'll find a city of deep artistic heritage—from the staggering Duomo to da Vinci's "The Last Supper." The real Milan reveals itself at 7 PM, when the city comes alive for aperitivo in the Navigli canals. This isn't a city that lays its charms bare. You need a local to unlock its best-kept secrets, from hidden design showrooms to the best risotto alla Milanese.
April-May or September-October. Spring is lovely, and fashion weeks in autumn bring a palpable buzz. April also hosts Salone del Mobile, the world's largest design fair.
You need to book it months in advance. A local knows which private tour operators have reserved tickets or can suggest visiting San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore (the "Sistine Chapel of Milan") instead, which is free and just as stunning.
The Navigli (canal) district is where you'll spend your evening. A local knows the best bars that offer a high-quality aperitivo buffet, not just stale chips and olives.
The "Quadrilatero d'Oro" is for window shopping. The real style is in the Brera district. A local will point you to the independent boutiques, artisan perfumeries, and hidden courtyards.
Your on-the-ground insiders. The ones who know the enduring favourites, the quiet corners and what’s worth your time.

My name is Lucia, and I am an art historian with a lifelong passion for culture, beauty, and travel. I have been working as a licensed professional tour guide for over 30 years, and throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of turning many clients into lasting friends. What truly sets me apart is my ability to connect with each traveler on a personal level. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all advice - I carefully listen to your interests, preferences, and pace to create a fully tailored experience just for you. If you’re looking for something authentic, far from mass tourism, you’re in the right place. I will guide you beyond the obvious, help you explore the hidden corners that only locals know, from extraordinary art masterpieces to the most delicious local foods, charming shops, and truly memorable experiences. Through me, you won’t just visit a place, you’ll experience it like a local. I have lived for many years in the main cities of Milan, Brescia, and Bergamo, but I later moved to Lake Iseo, which is a small, still unspoiled gem.

I’m originally from Italy and have spent years helping travellers plan their trips across the country through my instagram page @friendinitaly - from iconic destinations like Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast to lesser-known places that most tourists completely miss. After moving to the United States four years ago, I realized how difficult it can be to truly understand how to travel in Italy without local insight. That’s why I started helping people plan smarter, more authentic trips - not just following generic itineraries, but creating experiences that actually fit their travel style. I’ve helped hundreds of travellers with practical advice on transportation, timing, hidden spots, and how to avoid common mistakes that can ruin a trip. I also guide people on how to move efficiently between cities, how many days to spend in each destination, and which cities to choose for a first trip to Italy. Whether you're visiting Italy for the first time or coming back for something deeper, I can help you make the most of your time.

Lucrezia splits her time between Milan and Emilia Romagna. We asked her how to spend a long weekend on Italy's food and fashion spine. Where to eat, what to skip, and why visitors are getting the food wrong.
