Pesaro is a refined Adriatic resort city with a rich cultural soul. The birthplace of Gioachino Rossini, it hosts an annual opera festival (the Rossini Opera Festival in August) that draws music lovers worldwide. The centro storico is an elegant mix of medieval streets and Art Nouveau beach villas, with excellent ceramics museums reflecting the region's centuries-old maiolica tradition. Pesaro was Italian Capital of Culture 2024, which brought fresh investment and attention to its museums, gardens, and cultural venues. The long sandy beach and shallow waters make it ideal for families, while the nearby San Bartolo natural park offers dramatic cliff-top walks.
June to September for beach life. August for the Rossini Opera Festival. Spring and autumn are ideal for the San Bartolo park coastal walks and ceramics exploration.
Every August, Pesaro stages rarely performed Rossini operas in intimate theatres. A local will navigate the programme, secure tickets, and pair performances with the best post-opera dining in the old town.
The coastal park north of Pesaro offers dramatic cliff-top trails with views down to hidden coves. A local knows the paths to the quietest beaches and the village of Fiorenzuola for a seafood lunch.
Pesaro has been a centre of maiolica ceramics for 500 years. A local can arrange a visit to the excellent Museo delle Ceramiche and an artisan workshop where traditional techniques are still practised.
