What is the Venetian Jewish Ghetto in Cannaregio?

The Venetian Jewish Ghetto, established in 1516, was the first ghetto in Europe and gave the word its origin. It sits in the Cannaregio sestiere and is still home to a working synagogue community, a Jewish museum, and several historic buildings. Walking through it on the way around Cannaregio's quieter canals is the simplest way to understand a layer of Venice that San Marco never reveals.

What is Ca' Foscari and why visit Dorsoduro?

Ca' Foscari is a 15th-century Gothic palace on the Grand Canal that today houses one of Italy's leading universities. The Dorsoduro sestiere around it is shaped by that mix of medieval Venice and a daily student crowd, and includes Campo Santa Margherita, the Ponte dei Pugni, Campo San Barnaba, and Punta della Dogana. It is the most lived-in cultural quarter in the city.

How do you avoid the tourist crowds in Venice?

Skip San Marco at midday and walk one of the residential sestieri instead.
