Naples
Raw, electric, unforgettable—the birthplace of pizza and the soul of southern Italy.

About Naples
Naples is not for the faint-hearted. It's loud, chaotic, crumbling, and absolutely magnificent. This is the city that invented pizza, where Caravaggio fled and painted some of his greatest works, where underground Greek and Roman cities lie beneath your feet, and where Vesuvius provides a constant reminder that life is short. The centro storico—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is one of the largest in Europe, a grid of narrow streets (decumani) lined with baroque churches, skull-filled catacombs, and the world's best street food. Beyond the grit, Naples has extraordinary museums, a glamorous waterfront, and a food culture so fierce it borders on religious.
Best Time to Visit
April to June or September to October. Summer is scorching. Spring is perfect for combining city sightseeing with Vesuvius hikes. December brings spectacular Christmas nativity scenes (presepi) throughout the city.
Local Tips
- Go underground.
Beneath Naples lies an entire Greek-Roman city of tunnels, cisterns, and theatres. A local knows the best underground tours—from Napoli Sotterranea to the Bourbon Tunnel—and the hidden entrances most tourists miss.
- Eat pizza in a neighbourhood pizzeria.
Skip the famous spots with two-hour queues. A local will take you to the neighbourhood pizzeria their family has gone to for decades—where the pizza is just as extraordinary and the experience is entirely Neapolitan.
- Visit the skull church.
The Fontanelle Cemetery is a vast ossuary in a cave where Neapolitans once 'adopted' skulls and prayed to them. A local can explain this unique folk tradition and combine it with a walk through the atmospheric Sanità quarter.
