The Best Farmhouse Restaurants in the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines (A Vegetarian Cook's Honest Guide)

T

The Voyage Co.

As a vegetarian cook exploring farmhouse restaurants, I have learned to find places where cooks actually understand food. These are restaurants in hills where raw materials matter more than presentation, where you eat what the land provides. This is honest food.

Daria knows this area well because she has spent a lot of time exploring it in person. She likes finding places that feel authentic and sharing honest, practical advice — and as a vegetarian cook herself, she knows the spots with good prices and real ingredients.

1. Le Siepi di San Giovanni, Fontanelice

Apennine Hills

This restaurant is surrounded by beautiful Apennine hills and badlands. The building is authentic, typical of the Tuscan-Romagna area. The kitchen serves traditional cuisine made from high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

The atmosphere is charming and homely, with staff that is attentive and kind. You eat food that tastes like someone's grandmother made it — which is exactly right.

2. Trattoria Damì, Sassoleone

Apennine Hills

This is simple cooking done well. Everything is made in the kitchen: pasta, sauces, everything. The traditional dishes are authentic, the portions are generous, and the prices are really reasonable. You leave satisfied, which is what matters.

The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious. It is in the hills with a nice view — the perfect place for a quiet meal.

3. Azienda Agrituristica Ca' Noca, Casola Valsenio

Apennine Hills

The food here is really good — traditional dishes with homemade pasta and excellent meat. The portions are generous and the prices are fair, so you leave feeling satisfied and happy. The location is quiet, in the hills with a nice view.

The agriturismo has a swimming pool and horse riding available. It is a place where you can spend time, not just eat and leave.

4. Agriturismo in Marzabotto

Marzabotto

In the Marzabotto area, farmhouse restaurants serve food that comes from the surrounding fields. Seasonal menus mean they work with what is harvested, what is fresh. The connection between land and food is direct.

5. Agriturismo in Vergato

Vergato

Vergato farmhouses focus on local traditions, often family recipes passed through generations. The cooks understand food culturally, not just as something to prepare. This depth of knowledge creates meals that are meaningful.

The Apennines aren't on the tourist circuit, and that's exactly the point. Drive an hour out of Bologna or Florence on a Sunday, book a table at one of these, and you'll eat better than at any restaurant in either city — for half the price.
