About Hugo
I am a former British Army officer, serving a full career in one of the most famous Scottish Regiments. My job and my hobbies (mountains, artist, guide) have taken me all over Scotland - I am an accredited Blue Badge tourist guide, having completed the challenging 20 month qualification course. I have lived in Edinburgh, Stirling, Paisley, Glasgow and now live in the beautiful Scottish Borders, so my knowledge of Scotland is deep and wide! I was the Deputy Governor of Edinburgh Castle, was military commander of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and have even been the Executive Producer of an award winning venue for the Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh’s vibrant and occasionally anarchic arts festival!
What I can provide
With an MLitt on Scottish History, I can advise on where to find points if interested and connections with famous people and moments in Scottish History. For Outlander fans, I specialise in the (real) Jacobite Rebellions and know where to find the film locations too. I also specialise in Scottish battles and conflict, witches and folklore, Mary Queen of Scots family heritage and Highland Clan culture.
As a mountaineer who is steadily walking across most of Scotland, I know the landscape in detail and can steer you to the best spots. I can advise on routes, times, distance, the nice spots off the tourist trail and where to stop.
So many itineraries offered by agents are there to get potential visitors to commit to their tour… they are consequently rushed, overcrowded and miss the best of Scotland.
I hope my advice will lead to a a much better experience if this wonderful country for you!
